Jack was a military doctor before the Great War. When the bombs fell, he and a few soldiers managed to survive in a bunker, but unfortunately the door did not close properly. The soldiers died to the radiation, but Jack was transformed into a ghoul. He survived in the bunker for about fifteen years, before lack of food and water forced him to venture the wasteland.
